What is Sac-to-Zero?

Sac-to-Zero is the name of the outreach and marketing campaign to promote Electrify America’s Green City investments. Sacramento was designated as Electrify America’s first Green City, where the goal of investment is to increase the use of zero-emission vehicles (“ZEV”).

What is the goal of Sac-to-Zero (aka Green City)?

The goal of the Sac-to-Zero campaign is to increase electric vehicle (EV) use and adoption in Sacramento.  More specifically, its aims are to increase ridership for various ZEV car share and bus services it funds, as well as to encourage broader EV utilization in general. This is key to helping our partners, such as the City of Sacramento, SMUD, Sacramento Regional Transit, and the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District succeed in achieving their zero-emissions mobility goals.  Additional goals include increasing other electric mobility options such as electric scooters or bikes, and supporting the usage of public transit.

What are the 3 pillars of investment of the Sac-to-Zero program?

The pillars of investment are:

•          Zero Emission Vehicle carshare

•          Zero Emission Vehicle shuttle/bus

•          EV charging infrastructure

When do the various Sac-to-Zero initiatives launch?

The initiatives launch in stages over the next twelve months. A general outline is below:

  • ZEV car share
  • Envoy Car Share: This service is now live, and was first launched in November 2018.  Properties on which Envoy cars are located will continue to grow throughout spring 2019.
    • GIG Car Share: The service will launch in Sacramento’s urban core with a 13-mile HomeZone (service area in spring, 2019.
  • ZEV shuttle/bus
  • UC Davis: This route connects the UC Davis Main Campus with the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, with a stop in downtown Sacramento.  The service will be operational with electric buses by Q4-2019.  Electrify America’s service partners are Sacramento Regional Transit, Yolo County Transportation District and UC Davis
    • Franklin Blvd Corridor: This on-demand, micro-shuttle service is currently live employing traditional diesel-powered shuttles operated by Sacramento Regional Transit.  As part of the Sac-to-Zero program, Electrify America is providing three battery-electric shuttles, and the route will be fully electric by Q3/Q42019.  Sacramento Regional Transit will remain the service provider when the switch occurs.
  • EV charging infrastructure
  • Electrify America’s charging infrastructure, with at least 10 charging stations that each have multiple charging dispensers, will be fully operational in the Sacramento region by Q2-2019

What are car share vendors required to do to operate in the City?

Car Share vendors can apply for special parking privileges in the City’s right-of-way if they meet several City requirements. Gig is a permittee under the City’s Carshare Framework, and meets all City requirements, such as:

  • Meeting the minimum insurance requirements
  • Provided an outreach plan
  • Submits a data and monitoring plan
  • Operates a fleet of car share vehicles with consistent branding
  • Pays annual parking fees
  • Operates as a membership-based service
  • Uses an approved technology to collect real-time parking info
  • Allows qualified members to make vehicle trips with the use of a shared vehicle from an unstaffed location

Car Share vendors that do not have City parking permits must abide by all parking regulations, like any other vehicle.

What payment methods are accepted?

All Electrify America chargers accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards as well as Visa and MasterCard debit cards.

How do I start a DC fast charging session at an Electrify America charger?

To charge DC-capable EVs:

  1. Plug. Choose a compatible DC Fast connector and plug it into your vehicle’s charge port.
  2. Pay. Insert or swipe your credit or debit card to authorize your charging session following the display screen instructions.
  3. Charge. Take advantage of charging session text notifications and receive a receipt by text to optimize your time. Messaging and data rates may apply.
  4. Go. Upon completion of your vehicle charge, unplug, and continue on your way.

If one connector on a charger is already plugged in to a vehicle, can I use the other one?

Only one connector can be used per Electrify America DC fast charger at a time. If either connector is in use, please look for the next nearest available charger at that site to plug in. Each of our chargers has two connectors to accommodate vehicles with different charging port placement.

How do I know which connector works with my vehicle?

Look for the labels on every Electrify America charger, which clearly indicate CCS (green) and CHAdeMO (blue) connectors by color. If either connector is in use on a given charger, please look for the next available charger.

What do the Electrify America DC charger power levels listed on the station represent?

Electrify America DC fast chargers are capable of delivering up to 50 kW, 150 kW, or 350 kW, with higher kW outputs correlating to faster charging sessions. The blue and green labels on each charger indicate the maximum available kW.

Tip: A DC-compatible EV can be charged at any available Electrify America charger.

Car Share

What is GIG Car Share?

Gig is a new all-electric car sharing program offered in the City of Sacramento. It’s a one-way or free-floating car share service, which means you can pick up a car in one location, and drop it off in a different location within Gig’s service area, known as the HomeZone.

How do I use Gig?

To get started, download the GIG Car Share app and signup to become a Gig Member. Next, use the app to find an available Gig near you, unlock it, then start the engine and drive. Making multiple stops? Use the app to hold onto your Gig when it’s parked between stops.

Where can I find an Envoy car share vehicle?

Envoy car share vehicles can be found at various properties within the Sacramento region. For more information on exact locations please visit: https://www.envoythere.com/electrify-america 

How much do the Envoy car share vehicles cost to drive?

The price for using an Envoy car is currently $0.15 per minute or $9 per hour (please note that prices are subject to change, and could vary per property and vehicle)

Where can I charge the Envoy vehicles?

Envoy vehicles all have charging at their home location where a user picks up & returns the vehicle.

How much do the GIG Car Share cars cost to rent?

  • $0.40 per minute
  • $15 an hour
  • $85 for the day
  • Charging, insurance, and parking in the HomeZone are included.
  • Gig automatically calculates the best rate based on use.

How long can Gig car share vehicles stay parked on the street?

Like all motor vehicles, free-floating car share vehicles may park up to 72 hours in any legal parking space in accordance with the California Vehicle Code and Sacramento City Code.

Where can I park the Gig?

Gigs can be parked in any legal space that permits parking for one hour or more in the HomeZone, including metered or time zone spaces that allow one hour or more parking and are not otherwise restricted. The general rule is, if the parking sign is green for one hour or more, you’re in the clear. If it’s red, you can’t park there.

Do’s
Any one hour or longer parking spot if it is a:

  • Metered parking spot, or
  • Time zone parking spot, and
  • Not otherwise restricted (e.g., residential permit parking only)

Dont’s

  • No metered spots under one hour (i.e. 15-minute or 30-minute meters)
  • No restricted zones (i.e., residential permit only zones)
  • No red, yellow, or blue zones
  • No parking in spots with signs for City Services or other restrictions, or during the 12 hours prior to the restrictions

What’s a HomeZone?

The HomeZone is Gig’s service area; it is the area where you can start and end a trip. Gig’s Sacramento HomeZone is 13-sq-miles that largely encompasses the Central City. The HomeZone boundaries are viewable in the Gig app. You can drive a Gig out of the HomeZone, but you will need to return the car and end the trip back in the HomeZone.

Where can I find a GIG Car Share Car?

Are there other costs to use a Gig?

  • Minimum charge per trip: $2.50
  • Park and come back on short trips less than 1 hour: $0.30/minute
  • Surcharge over 250 miles per trip: $0.45/mile
  • Parking fees outside the HomeZone: All standard parking laws and fees are enforced outside the HomeZone.
  • Bay Area Bridge Tolls: Every car is registered with the FasTrak system. Tolls are automatically billed to your account the following month.
